When the old school near the Church closed on Wed. 23 July 1980 and moved to Badgeworth Lane, head-teacher Mr Brayshaw very painstakingly went through the school registers and listed all the main events that had taken place, and also the list of teachers.
The list was  typed up by Mrs Betty Rout.

SHURDINGTON PRIMARY SCHOOL
Extracts from Early Log Books to present time.

First entry – March 30th 1876 – Commenced school today. Twenty children to start with.

First certified teacher – Kate Llewellen

July 28th 1876 - Bad weather continually given as reason for absences. Morning very wet - few children came to school.

August 4th 1876 – Attendance much lower because of harvesting.

October 26th 1876 - Only 18 children present this morning, owing to a stag hunt in the neighbourhood.

October 27th 1876- Average Attendance low, many away because of sickness, others fruit picking.

January 2nd 1877 - Re-opened school after two months closure.

February 9th 1877 - Many of the children returned to school who have been absent all the summer.

March 16th 1877 - Many children are away this week as the garden work is commencing.

December 21st 1877 - Closed school for a week for Christmas holidays.

March 18th 1878 - I continued with the last lesson until 12 o'clock instead of having tables.

May 13th 1878- School re-opened after 2 weeks. Closure was because of epidemic of measles.

June 6th 1878 - Numbers rather better this week, but some children are still very irregular, coming only one or two days in a week and many being kept from school to work.

July 19th 1878- The heat has been so very great this week, I find it makes the children feel inclined to be idle, and have hard work to get them to attend to their lessons.

August 5th 1878 - I find that for the future it will be necessary to take Grammar instead of Geography when the latter is marked on the TimeTable.

October 4th 1878 - Numbers have decreased again this week on account of the fair held at Cheltenham.

May 2nd 1879 - Inspector's report uses name Shurdington National School.

June 25th 1879- Received new books, slates etc.

July 11th 1879 - I am rather discouraged with Standard 1. I cannot seem to get them to improve. Several of these are fresh children who have been sent to a Dame's school in the village and they have no idea of making even their letters or figures.

October 24th 1879 - 50 children present.

June 10th 1880 - Some of the children in Standard I are getting on very nicely, but there are two or three who are exceedingly backward and who seem to find great difficulty in learning.

March 9th 1882 - First reference to an Attendance Officer - Mr. Weaver visited the school.

March 21st 1882 - School closed, reason not given, for 6 weeks. Possibly measles epidemic.

May 9th 1884 - 63 present - one teacher.

May 12th 1884 - 73 on roll.

August 7th 1884 - Obliged to close because of a very bad smell in the lane outside.

January 5th 1885 - Col. Godfrey gave a tea and Magic Lantern show to the children .

March 1886- 70 on roll.

February 1887 - 82 on roll.

July 18th 1887 - 78 present.

November 20th 1890- Mrs. Welch mentioned.

March 16th 1891 - Mabel Hitch admitted.

June 30th 1 891 - Arthur Day admitted.

1893- Barbara Joynes mentioned.

1896- Agnes Joynes admitted.

May 3rd 1897 – Harmonium provided to assist in the teaching of singing and physical activities.

May 13th 1897 - Day's holiday for the visit of the Prince of Wales to Cheltenham.

1903 - Mr. Deavall, Attendance Officer.

February 1904- Visit by Mr. Household.

March 28th 1904 - School closed for 'an election'.

 

November 1904 - Mrs. Hitch visited the school. Mr. Law often visited, as did Miss Godfrey who gave gifts to the children.

June 1905 - 84 on roll.

January 14th 1907 - Attendance low - hounds meeting in the village.

March 1907 - 70 on books

October 5th 1909 - Medical Inspection recorded.

December 3rd 1907 - Nurse Varey mentioned. Attendance Officer Mr. Irving.

May 20th 1910 - School closed. Funeral of Edward VII.

April 1910 - 51 on registers.

31st January 1911 - Nurse Powell inspected heads.

May 11th 1911 - Mrs. Sinclair visited the school.

June 1st 1911 - Dr. Bower mentioned.

July 6th 1911 - Mrs. Robertson of Shurdington Lodge visited the school.

October 17th 1912 - Miss Purton and Miss Welch visited the school.

July 3rd 1916 - First mention of a dental inspection - by J. Knowles.

October 1916 - Nurse Pemberton visited.

December 6th 1916 - School half-holiday because General French was visiting Cheltenham

September 17th 1918 - School closed "to allow children to gather blackberries for Army and Navy" - for the famous blackberry & apple jam?

April 7th 1919 - School closed for Election purposes.

September 22nd 1919 - Mrs. Wilson and Miss Wilson visited. Presented picture of Dr. Wilson to the school.

October 22nd 1919 - Nurse Goddard visited.

May 21st 1920 - Empire Day celebrated by a lesson, singing and saluting the flag.

11th April 1921 - Nurse Cripps.

June 10th 1921 - First mention of allocation of County Library books.

19th September 1921 - Admitted Alec Hubert Bailey, aged 3.

7th November 1921 - Admitted Beryl Irene Day, aged 3.

1922 - 53 on roll.

February 16th 1922 - Scholarship exam mentioned.

February 28th 1922 - Closure - wedding Princess Mary and Vis. Lascelles.

February 26th 1923 - Closure for Duke of York's wedding day (King George VI)

28th March 1927 - First Class certificate, Country Dancing.

July 27th 1927 - First mention of an Open Day. About this time, children began to qualify for the Technical and Grammar Schools in Cheltenham in the Scholarship exam.

October 1929 - Older girls had cookery course at Village Hall.

June 16th 1930 - Kathleen Maud Denley gained free place scholarship to Pate's Grammar School.

March 28th 1931 - Silver Challenge Cup won at Folk Dancing Festival, Gloucester.

Team: Beryl Day, Rosamund Townsend, Dorothy Cook, Beryl Jones, James Dyer, John Dyer, John Daykin and Kenneth Twinning.

June 1st 1931 - Kenneth Twinning awarded free place at Cheltenham Grammar School.

July 23rd 1931 - First mention of the Wilson essays for the Sinclair Prize. James Dyar won the £3.3.0d prize.

March 17th 1932 - I caned the following boys for staying away for a Point to Point race (Miss Campbell) October 24th 1932 - 1d and 6d stamps on sale at school.

June 1934 - Miss K. Ford visited (District Nurse)

May 2nd 1935 - Mr. Robertson, County Councillor, and wife visited school in connection with Silver Jubilee.

6th November 1935 - School closed for Duke of Gloucester's wedding day.

January 28th 1936 - Considerable interest in funeral of King George V.

20th February 1936 - Nurse Jeatt.

May 12th 1936 - Closed for King George VI Coronation. Medals given by Sir Robert Perkins, presented by Mr. and Mrs. Robertson, who provided flags.

July 27th 1936 - School had tea at the ‘White House’ with Mrs. Burrows.

September 4th 1939 - School re-opening delayed because of declaration of war.

September 17th - Gas mask practice held. Knitting for the Forces.

September 1940 - Evacuees from Eastbourne.

 

April 1941 - Diphtheria immunisation began here.

October 1941 - Vegetables supplied to Chargrove Army Camp

November 10th 1941 - Head Teacher cooked meals on premises. 3d each.

March 10th 1942 - School canteen opened at Village Hall. Cook: Mrs. Twinning

November 5th 1945 - Cook: Mrs. Thompson.

October 22nd 1947 - Miss Ida Wilson unveiled memorial to Dr. Wilson

November 20th 1947 - Princess Elizabeth's Wedding Day - school holiday.

November 29th 1948 - Seniors transferred to Charlton Kings Secondary Modern.

September 1965 - 1973, Initial Teaching Alphabet at Infant department.

September 1966 - Mrs. Slocombe began remedial reading sessions.

September 1970 - First full class of children transferred to Chosen Hill for comprehensive education.

Gas heating installed at Junior Department.

29th June 1971 - School party visited France accompanied by Miss Jones, teacher of French.

11th February 1972 - Coal miners' strike. Power stations picketed and electricity cuts.

School heating not functioning. Departments of school closed on various half days. School meals for Juniors cooked at cook's house (Mrs. E. Bailey)

5th September 1972 - Mr. Allen started a year's secondment to take a full-time course at Oxford University Inst. of' Education. Mrs. E.W. Harris, Acting Head Teacher for the year.

9th November 1973 - Juniors visited Everyman Theatre, Beauty and the Beast .

18th January 1974 - Funeral of Mr. Frank Stubbs, a Manager.

21st February 1974 - Trees planted with help of' various classes at many points in the village. Parish Council requested involvement of the children.

24th April 1974 - Mrs. E .W. Harris on retiring presented Harris Cup for Helpfulness to Julie Farquharson.

4th September 1974 - Classes renamed, Infants - Red, Blue, Green and Yellow, Juniors- J1, J2, J3 and J4 18th December 1974 - Arion Productions gave a performance of "The Green Hat" at the Social Centre for Junior Classes.

8th January 1975 - Number on roll 235

18th March 1975 - J4 children took part in the North Glos. Schools Music Festival at Cheltenham Town Hall.

21st April 1975 - J4 children started a week's camp at Churnside.

May 1975 - Martin Wright went on County Educational Cruise to Scandinavia.

3rd September 1975 - Number of Infant Classes reduced from 4 to 3. Junior Classes increased from 4 to 5.

19th November 1975 - Two members of the Ermin Street Guard, dressed as Roman soldiers talked to Junior Classes about the Romans.

22nd March 1976 - Children expressed their support for an anti-litter campaign in the village.

30th April 1976 - Three girls of Class J4 left on Educational Cruise of Scandinavia.

7th September 1976 - Number of classes reduced to 7 - 3 Infants, 4 Juniors.

 

12th November 1976 - A drinking fountain installed at the Junior Department.

10th January 1977 - All the budgerigars in the aviary died during the Christmas holiday.

13th January 1977 - Class J4 did not go to swimming because heavy snow was delaying traffic and coaches could not get here.

25th February 1977 - Graham Wiltshire, Gloucester County Cricket Club coach came to talk to older children about skill in ball games.

11th April 1977 - Store cupboard constructed in corridor, Junior Department.

24th April 1977 - 3 children of Class J4 and 2 from Birdlip School, accompanied by Mr. Brayshaw, departed on Educational Cruise, flying to Rome, by sea to N.Africa and Spain and Portugal, returning to Liverpool.

14th May 1977 - Hall window and stone-work replaced.

3rd June 1977 - Queen's Silver Jubilee - Mugs presented to children by Vicar, Revd.C.D. Bradley, as Chairman of Jubilee Committee.

15th July 1977- District Health Inspector declared kitchen facilities at Social Centre unsuitable without costly alterations.

6th September 1977 - Number of classes reduced to 6 - 2 Infant, 4 Junior.

12th & 13th December 1977 - Class J4 gave concert "Sing-along with J4". Prepared and directed by Mrs. Passey.

17th April 1978 - Classes J3 and J4 went on river cruise from Bristol Docks to Sharpness.

21st June 1978 - The Theatre in Education Group came to take a drama project "The Eagle and the Oak" about Celts and Romans. Class J4 children took part.

17th July 1978 - The first Parents v Children Games Evening was held.

9th May 1979 - Classes J3 and J4 went on a Rail Roundabout Tour to Bristol by High-speed Train to Swindon to visit the Railway Museum.

3rd July 1979 - Energy Theatre performed their play "Weave a tale" for all the children at the Social Centre.

20th July 1979 - At the Leavers' Service Mrs. L. Marsh on retiring as a Manager, presented the Lilian Marsh Prize for individual topic work to Catherine Weaver and Mrs. Brenda Evans, Chairman of the Parish Council, presented the Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee Committee Prize for outstanding progress to Ian Bloomfield.

6th September 1979 - Number of classes reduced to 5. First admission of infants for full 3 year Infant Course.

22nd October 1979 – Building of extension at Badgeworth Lane site began.
