POLAR CAMP ~ 11-13 JANUARY 2008 YOULBURY SCOUT ACTIVITY CENTRE, BOARS HILL, OXFORDSHIRE ![]() This is the 6th year that Shurdington Scouts & Explorers have ventured to Youlbury in the cold of January. This year it really turned into a Polar Camp, for some of us at least. Friday 11th January saw an unprecedented snow blizzard that caught two of our Leaders on the hop on the A417. The unlucky ones were ASL Marie who left Cirencester at 6pm and arrived in Cheltenham at 5am the next day, stuck on the glorious A417, and myself having left home at 4pm, got stuck by the Star Centre in heavy blizzard and finally got to Youlbury just after midnight amidst cheers from the campers as I had their cornflakes in my trailer. The camp was its usual great fun, starting with a night hike on Friday followed by games, Saturday morning was spent sampling the new challenges like Jacob's Ladder and 3G-Swing and then off to Oxford Park & Ride. At 2pm Scouts spent two hours ice skating, followed by shopping in the arcade. The culmination of the evening was a slap up meal at E.A.M.A.Y.L a full Chinese meal. Back to our HQ Building for evening games and a cancelled campfire due to the rain setting in again. Sunday was composed of a welcome visit to the unique Museum of Scouting, thoroughly enjoyed by all, especially after being allowed to wear the old fashioned but popular variety of Scouting hats, orienteering and tackling several bases and challenges, a Scouts Own by the fire, investitures and a clearing up session before heading on the A40 to home. A GREAT WEEKEND Sincere thanks to Leaders and Adults Louise Slee, Steve Hanks, Marie Brimelow, Rick Moran, Craig and Kath Simmonds, and Paul. Rob and Norman ably looked after the Explorers on site. |
